UPDATE: CR Modifier

BlueCross® BlueShield® of South Carolina and BlueChoice HealthPlan continue to cover testing services to diagnose COVID-19 at 100 percent of the allowed amount for members when medically necessary and prescribed by a health provider.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, limited coding was available. As a result, several CPT codes, diagnoses and modifiers were implemented to help identify COVID-19 related services that were to be covered at 100 percent; one of which was the CR modifier.

Now that explicit coding has been established to help identify COVID-19 related services, the CR modifier is no longer required on claims. Claims should be submitted with one of the explicit CPT and diagnosis codes related to COVID-19. A sample of the codes to be used include:
